China has commenced its first dedicated natural (geologic) hydrogen scientific well, Jinqing Scientific Exploration Well No. 1, near Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia. The well, spudded in early October 2025, was designed to ~800 m and targeted hydrogen generated by water–rock reactions in ancient volcanic basement within the Jiergalantu Depression, Erlian Basin. The program is led by Peking University with participation from the China Geological Survey and regional government agencies.
While results are yet to be reported, China’s state-backed entry into geologic hydrogen highlights the potential and growing momentum to this emerging resource. This underscores growing government and academic interest in validating subsurface hydrogen systems globally.
Note: This is a scientific appraisal well. No flow results or commercial conclusions have been announced.
